In the 1950s, Elizabeth Taylor carried one of Gucci’s bamboo-handled tote bags, another adaptation to material rationing. (No list of revered designer purses would be complete without Gucci.) The material was first used on suitcases before finding enduring popularity on handbags. ![]() Its woven hemp fabric from Naples, adorned with the brand’s signature diamond print, was a hit, especially among A-list celebrities. In the mid-1930s, a League of Nations embargo against Italy pushed Gucci to experiment with alternatives to imported leather. In 1938, he brought three of his sons - Aldo, Vasco and Rodolfo - into the business and expanded it to Rome and later Milan. But as its reputation flourished, particularly among the English aristocracy, so too did its footprint. So, in 1921, after a stint at Franzi, a luggage company in his hometown of Florence, he opened a leather goods shop of his own.Īt first, Gucci’s Florence business specialized in equestrian accessories. Guccio Gucci (1881–1953) admired the stylish suitcases he saw wealthy guests arrive with at the Savoy Hotel in London, where he worked as a bellhop. Today, it’s an internationally renowned luxury house with an iconic logo, and vintage Gucci clothing, handbags and shoes are among high fashion's most covetable goods. Long before trend-bucking creative director Alessandro Michele brought his hallucinatory “Utopian Fantasy” campaign to Gucci, it was a modest Italian leather shop. ![]() ![]() ![]() I added chrome wheels with copper tires, a floor shifter, new carpet, replaced the speedometer, added a tachometer and bucket seats. All we can do now is wait patiently for a possible future with an El Camino, and ponder the all-important question: Is it a car, or a truck? If you asked Chevy, they'd tell you it's whatever you want it to be.I purchased a 1982 El Camino that I restored with a Chevy 350 crate engine and a R-700 transmission. But is there room for a comeback?Ĭhevrolet debuted an El Camino concept in 1995 based on the full-size Caprice station wagon, but production was cancelled thanks to the rise of the SUV. It's been more than a quarter century since the last El Camino rolled off the production line, and its story reads like a washed-up celebrity who was in the spotlight, then out of it, then got back in for a late-career surge before being cast to the side for newer, better models. V6 engines were available for the first time, and from 1982 through 1984, diesel engines sourced from Oldsmobile were also an option.Īfter the 1984 model year, El Camino production was moved to Mexico, and in 1987, the El Camino was discontinued thanks to outstanding sales of the Chevrolet S-10 pickup. The fifth and final generation saw a smaller, sleeker El Camino with sharper styling and a single headlight design. This would be the last generation produced. Fifth Generation (1978 - 1987)Ī fifth-generation 1979 El Camino. The V8 was still an option, but the aforementioned government mandates meant that the 454 was only putting out 215 hp. The El Camino was lucky enough to retain a Super Sport version for this generation, as Chevrolet dropped the Chevelle SS in 1973 and Nova SS after 1976 (they had previously discontinued the Impala, Monte Carlo, and Camaro SS trims).Ī new grille would debut in 1975, and a 105 hp 250 cubic inch I6 was the standard engine. The fourth generation started with a dramatic restyling, and catalytic converters were now standard equipment on all models. A rebadged El Camino called the GMC Sprint also debuted, which featured the same transmission and engine as the El Camino. With 1971 came government mandates requiring lower-octane unleaded fuel, which resulted in reduced performance and power with the rest of GM's vehicles. A few select 1970 El Caminos received the LS6 454 cubic inch engine, which was Chevrolet's most powerful engine and was rated up to 450 hp. It didn't hurt that you could pack the big block V8, which was sadly discontinued in 1975. The Super Sport (SS) 396 was launched alongside a Chevelle twin in 1968. This is the generation where the El Camino made the jump from utility car to sporty ride. Despite its larger size, it was lighter than the previous generation thanks to lighter construction and a front-end restyle with quad stacked headlights. In alignment with its popularity, the El Camino grew in its third generation and was built on a 4-door sedan wheelbase. Third Generation (1968 - 1972)Ī 1968 El Camino SS 396 via Wikimedia Commons. Air shocks were also incorporated, which allowed drivers to compensate for heavy loads. This comprised of a new front bumper, grille, and trim. ![]() This trend of growing engines continued over the next few years, culminating in a 396 V8 big block rated up to 375 hp.Ĭertain Chevy models received a refreshed design in 1967, the El Camino included. The second-generation variant leaned more toward practicality but also had the option of packing a 327 cubic inch small-block V8 rated up to 300 hp in 1964.Ī year later, a performance version of the V8 was available that pushed it up to 350 hp. With the Ranchero still selling well, Chevy brought back the El Camino on the proven Chevelle platform. It could have been the new flamboyant wings of full-sized Chevys or perhaps the Ranchero's hefty stake in the market, but after just 2 years and 36,409 El Caminos produced, Chevy dropped the ax on the model. The El Camino was built on a modified Brookwood station wagon platform. GM flirted with coupe-type trucks such as the Chevrolet Cameo Carrier and the GMC Suburban Carrier in 1955, but they went all-in with the El Camino for the 1959 model year. The El Camino was a direct challenge Ford's Ranchero, a utility coupe dominating a previously untapped market. Is it a truck, or is it a car? We'll try to answer that question in this post. In the history of the automotive world, no car has evoked the existential stoicism of the Chevy El Camino. ![]() ![]() ![]() These really deserve an article all to themselves ( ED: Coming soon, as I’ve found one). A somewhat predictable trend, but who could have guessed the most quintessential British brand would end up in China?įirst up is the MG 1100, which along with its many badge-engineered siblings, is also known as the ADO16. Despite this, bespoke saloon designs were no more, as every car was based heavily on the offerings of the current parent company. They even attempted to go high-tech in the early 1980s with digital dashes and voice control. This time we’ll watch MG try to spice things up with front-wheel drive, hatchbacks and turbos. The 6R4 itself continued to compete in private hands wherever it was accepted, usually in 250bhp ‘Clubman’ spec, but the full potential of the 400bhp ‘International’ version will never be known.( first posted ) In MG Sporting Saloons Part One we saw the more traditional interpretations on the sporty family saloon. It also sold the design of the V64V engine, to TWR, in whose hands it evolved into a 3.5-litre twin-turbo unit that appeared in Jaguar’s Group C racers and the XJ220 road car. The 6R4’s best WRC result would forever remain Pond’s third place in the 1985 Lombard RAC.Īustin Rover pulled out of motorsport in 1987 and sold off its stock of 6R4s by reducing the original £45,000 asking price to just £16,000. Before these could be ironed out, a series of fatal accidents led to Group B being cancelled at the end of 1986. Unfortunately the longer WRC events proved more punishing for the 6R4, and it frequently failed to finish, usually due to engine problems. In March 1985 the 6R4 took its first win, at the Gwynedd Rally, and by October the 200 cars required to homologate the super-Metro for the World Rally Championship had been built. During this time the 6R4’s wheelbase and track grew, the glassfibre bodywork sprouted huge wings for increased downforce, and, eventually, the 400bhp V64V engine was fitted, enabling the car to hit 60mph in just 3.2sec, and 100mph in 8.2sec. A significant amount of fine-tuning was still required, and this would all happen in the public eye as the car was entered in a number of British rallies over the months that followed. This early car – painted in red with a white roof, just like the rallying Coopers of the ’60s – was still far from finished. As the film reached its climax, the car was driven directly towards the camera, and just as it became life-size on the cinema screen, a real 6R4 burst through it, the driver – one Tony Pond – bringing the car to a halt just short of the astonished crowd. The event began with the gathered journalists being invited to watch a film of a prototype undergoing testing. ![]() The MG Metro 6R4 (6-cylinder, Rally, 4-wheel drive) made its press debut at London’s Excelsior Hotel in February 1984 – and in rather dramatic style. A Honda V6 was considered (one would soon appear in the Rover 800), as was the venerable Rover V8, but Williams design chief Patrick Head wanted something smaller and lighter. While most Group B cars were adopting turbocharged four-cylinder engines, Davenport decided his Metro should employ a larger capacity, naturally aspirated engine, thus avoiding problems with turbo lag and higher running temperatures. As luck would have it, in 1982 Austin Rover was one of the Williams F1 team’s sponsors, so the required skills were close at hand… ![]() John Davenport, chief of the British company’s motorsport division, had no trouble deciding that his tubular chassis’d silhouette rally car should adopt the appearance of the Metro, simply because of its diminutive size (as he would later say: ‘A small car makes a small track look bigger’), but he also knew that developing a Group B car was beyond what his team could achieve alone. Audi, Lancia, Peugeot and Ford would all build cars to fit this new class and, having retired its TR7 competition cars at the end of 1980, Austin Rover wanted to join in the action too. The relative lack of restrictions and the small build numbers required to homologate a model for competition meant that, while most of the cars bore a passing resemblance to mainstream road-going models, beneath the skin they had almost nothing in common. Introduced in 1982, FISA’s Group B regulations enabled manufacturers to build rally cars the likes of which had never been seen before. ![]() ![]() ![]() aperture Only apply the preset if the aperture of your image lies within the given range set f/0 as the lower value to match arbitrarily open apertures set f/+ as the upper value to match arbitrarily closed apertures. exposure Only apply the preset if the exposure time of your image lies within the given range set + as the upper value to match arbitrarily long exposures. I think what really will happen, is that they'll sell the core content (game + extra teams) to the impatient for about the same price they did in BB2 - and then proceed milking the fanbase with some paid cosmetics (which I don't mind at all, and may even buy a few if they are good). I don't think they'll force some "greedy, exploiting" systems on us at all, they understand more than anybody how fragile and niche their market is, and that they shouldn't risk to pressure it to such extent, for a little bit extra revenue. Honestly, I don't share the scepticism everyone seems to exhibit. Also I believe they will still make it possible to acquire the teams (at least) even if you missed the season entirely. If so, it's not that bad - if you see you won't make it in time before the end of the season, you can just swipe your card. I believe what they say is if you'll decide to pay with cash for the current season at some point before it ends, you'll instantly get all its content that has been released so far, including the new team (if it's there to collect). ![]() |
